In theory, “New Girl” should work. The pilot alone has some major names behind it, including playwright Liz Meriwether, former “Freaks and Geeks” director Jake Kasdan, and the incredibly underrated Jake Johnson. Yet it is anchored solely on the presence of Zooey Deschanel, who (while radiant as ever) is unfortunately tasked with taking AV Club writer Nathan Rabin’s “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” archetype, and playing it bigger than Nic Cage after a weeklong bender.
